Jan 1st and 2nd + Hatsu Uri
Erm... I woke up at 6am today and just can't go back to sleep. So here I am finally moving on to the new year in my blog.
But before that, I spent New Year eve at a friend's house with a very large and very spoilt TV and did not get to watch Kouhaku!! Boo boo!! Somehow, new year does not feel like new year without kouhaku. It was a gathering that I managed to weasel into at the very last minute. If not, I'll be spending new year with a box of chocolates and cheesecakes at home! Phew! However, no kouhaku and no hatsumoude. For those who watch Full Metal Alchemist, this is called 等価交換.
For the first and second day of this new year, I spent my mornings waking up early and rushing for the first day sale (hatsu uri) in the various department stores here. However, it was actually a sale of fukubukuro. I mentioned this some posts back but to repeat, it is a closed bag filled with items that costs two or three times the amount that it is sold for. And what a crazy crowd! By the time I reached Oodori station at 10.30am, lots of shoppers were already loaded with several large bags and were on the way home. There were girls squatting at various corners of the station digging through the sea of bags around them and exchanging clothes they did not want with each other. I bought 2 bags, each for $75 and there was even a jacket in each bag. The fun was in jostling with the crowds on new year and in digging through the bag to see what treasures and what rubbish I can get. Take a look at the video I took and see how crazy it was.
On the second day, me and another friend had been blessed with an invitation for dinner from a family from church! We had sukiyaki! My first sukiyaki since coming here. And there were even some Osecchi dishes too. After dinner, we played Uno. Yes, I know everybody played it before but this has an added set of rules. The winner gets to choose the largest slice of cake for desert! I was really impressed with the speed they played at and as expected, I lost... ^_^
