Mariko in Sapporo (5th-7th Feb)
Mariko came over to visit during a long wkend in Japan. (Note: Most hols here are placed either on Fri or Mon to make the wkend longer.) Wow! It has been 2 long years since I had met her. She's really easy to talk to so even though we don't really keep in contact for 2 years except for the occasional hol greeting over email, it had been as if the years in between were inexistent. ^_^
As usual, coming to Sapporo means a day trip over to Otaru! So here I am on my 2nd Otaru visit. However, I got to go to this coastal area about 7min taxi ride from Otaru canal where I can see about 300 degrees of the sea horizon. Wow! Ok, unless you have a car, don't take the taxi there. It costs a bomb!!
This is how the actual Otaru canal looks like. Just remind me of how much of tourism is actually constructed. The canal most tourists see is too small even for fishing boats to pass through!
Then, it's the seafood again! I brought Mariko over to the same restaurant I went the other time. The food was just as good. No sea urchin for me this time though!
After a day in Otaru, it's onwards back to Sapporo for some juicy, succulent lamb. We managed to find the legendary BBQ lamb restaurant, Daruma. BUT... there is a long queue outside the small restaurant, waiting in the cold freezing rain! So we gave up. When can I ever get in there!!!???
The next day, it's time to check out the city of Sapporo. But before that, we went to Sapporo factory to visit Petland, this big store selling stuffs for pets. As this is the sale season, I thought I can get some discounted dog food for Variel. Unfortunately, it's not sale season for pets! Even so, me and Mariko got to cuddle two cute little kittens. I think they are American shorthairs. How much? Ha ha! SGD1500!!!!!!!
We went to Tanuki koji (狸小路) after my disappointing purchase at Petland. I have always wanted to properly explore this place and now's my chance! there are a lot of these covered walkways lined with shophouses in Japan. However, I was dismayed to discover that this one is lined with pachinko palours instead! I can't help but compare this to Naha's Kokusai douri. Sighhh!!! There are much nicer and interesting shophouses over there...
Oh, and that's a pic of Mariko looking at those Marimo balls. It's some kind of living seaweed that can grow until really huge... in maybe 30 plus years....
After a day of sightseeing and shopping, time to RnR at Royce cafe. FYI, chocolate no. 17,18 and 20 are absolutely heavenly!
After a short stopover at my fav supermarket at Nishi 34 (which I almost never go cos it's too too far), we went back home to cook dinner. It's Chanko nabe, the power food for sumos! Here's the chef, waving her knife around.

We were so full that we collapsed on the carpet and laid there for more than 2 hours!! Mariko had to leave the next morning but we slept really late. We woke up in time though.
So here I am, waiting for the next visitor, Yen Ling!!!
