My english-ness is F**king not for sale or to be objectified
I guess I only blog when I have something to say. Which becomes an oxymoron cos I don't like to write wordy blogs.
Ok, a quick update:
1) Busy with several presentations of which I have just finished last week
1.5) Thus, watched all the latest episodes in this season's Boston Legal and Grey's Anatomy.
2) Very cleverly (if I may say so!) made a teacher (Dr K!) convinced that I should write my masters thesis in English by writing an english essay with my 'orrible 'orrible Japanese presentation. He was so pleased with himself as he could read my english essay while he totally don't understand what I am talking about in my Japanese presentation
3) Expecting to spend a non-lonely Christmas this year as compared to last. Most of my friends will know that I am usually very passive when it comes to friendship. If not for Eleanor, I would have a very very extremely lonely Christmas last year. This year, Ayu (my friend frm Okinawa who is currently studying here), invited me to an onsen trip tomorrow. And Dawn invited me to her house for a christmas lunch. Two friends!! I am not on an island!!
4) And now we come to the title of this post. The title says it all anyway. I know from my year 3 module, Sociology of Religion, that religious institutions provide a brand of service to its consumers. Thus, it needs to sell a product that caters to the needs of the consumers. But I am a consumer and I refused to be perceived as a product!!!
I think I blew my top today when this lady brought her gaggle of friends to be introduced to me and Erica during the church's Xmas celebrations. I am already not pleased when she introduced her friends to me in her halting english. She knows I can speak Japanese as we have briefly chatted in the past. To be honest, my mind is already starting to cloud in anger when I heard somebody saying I am an ENGLISH TEACHER. Maybe it's not that "SPG" Japanese lady who said that. I am so angry that I am really not sure at that point. I just burst out in Japanese that I am a Hokkaido Uni student and NOT an english teacher. Then, I walked off. I do not anger easily but I hate seeing pathetic Japanese forcibly trying to practice english on others and I hate to be objectified as someone you can practice your english on. She does NOT try to be my friend cos I am only something to be used.
Imagine how would that Jpn version 'SPG' feel if she goes to her 'land of the free America' and all americans spoke half-mast Japanese to her?
Disclaimer: I still love God and I still love my church here even though I know it is not perfect.
