countdown to za B-DAY
The day where I will be fully and irreversibly entrenched into the threshold of the late twenties. Where I will say to somebody, 'I am 28 years old' and get replies like, 'How do you manage to look so young?!', 'What's kind of make-up do u use?!' etc. Note: this is a validation to the wonders of commercialised cosmetics and not to the fact that I DO look young.
My antipathy towards looking old has nothing to do with the glossy magazines touting the pinnacle of what female beauty should be. Rather, I would like to think that I had somehow escaped such a prison of ideals as I don't look... erm... let's just say that I don't look 'ideal' enough when I was young. For a 17 yr old girl, you either work hard to reach the ideal or you don't care. I choosed the latter throughout my teenage years. So, my actual problem is that I don't FEEL 28. I just barely got used to being 25.
Anyway, as I was saying to Huijun (My junior from NUS who is currently an exchange student in Hokkaido uni), it's no fun planning bday parties at all. I wish everybody can simply gather at one place and get it over and done with. Look at how my bdayssss turn out to be:
16th: Afternoon, go wif Erica and Huijun to go Costco and buy the food needed for me and Erica's bday party tomorrow. (Erica's born on 17th) evening: Meet up with Guiying and Huijun to eat bbq lamb (Ghenghis Khan) for only 900 yen. This is to celebrate my bday with Gy 17th: combined bday party with Erica at karaoke and stuff ourselves with the cheesecakes and junk food from Costco and sing the whole day away. Don't know who is coming at all. 18th: 10pm onwards, Mayuko is coming over to do my bday countdown, then watch sex and the city into the wee hours of the morning 19th: Interestingly, nobody is celebrating my bday with me on my bday itself. hmmm.......... hmmm....... 20th: Dinner with my classmates in my postgrad class 22nd: Cake viking in the afternoon with Ayumi and others. Then, we mite go to Ayumi's hostel for karaoke. Not sure if i wanna go cos need to pay at least 500yen for travel. (Update: Karaoke in susukino, then high class sushi with my eng convo students.)
Then, there is the language problem (I really love Erica but I really don't know why she can't speak japanese/ or tink that english is the taken for granted vernacular in Japan) and my all time problem of my friends who are not friends or are not friendly with each other. How come this happens to me in Japan too? Dunno whether to laugh or cry...
------------------------------------- On to another topic altogether. I went to a demo today to protest against the G8 summit among a group of rather out of the norm activists uncles. We took to the streets of Sapporo city and were escorted by policemen and their flashing cars. The everyday scene of the main street took on a different hue when I was shouting from the roads. I became worthy of being a momento when passing tourist took pictures of us. Will upload the pics and videos asap. Btw, I am wearing a beanie that dear Kat gave me. Aren't you glad that the first time I wore your gift, it was to a demo!
