Hokudai Library sucks!
In the first place, I don't have a good impression of Hokudai library. I guess it is not easy for most libraries here to live up to the standard of NUS central library. Hokudai library: - have no wireless internet at all - more than half of the books are in closed stacks and are closed to undergrads. They can't borrow books from there. As a postgrad, I can access it but I feel sorry for those poor undergrads. - An environment extremely inconducive to studying. (Hot and stuffy, no sofas, stifling...)
And recently, it has (finally!) started a penalty structure for late book which is totally STUPID! If you are late for 10 days, you won't be able to borrow any books for 10 days. I would much rather prefer to pay NUS lib's fines. So now, I have some late books. But I definitely need it for preparing for next week's presentation. However, if I return it now, I won't be able to borrow it again. Which means I can't use it for next week's presentation. If I return it next week, I won't be able to borrow it for more than 2 weeks, which means I won't be able to properly start on my thesis this month. So I might as well never return it until my paper is done.
This system does not consider the fact that students need books to study. Or maybe they took it for granted that students don't use much books to study in the first place. Afterall, I had been lamenting over the fact that lecturers here give too little reading for us.
IF I really do my Phd, I will definitely not do it here. It's pathetic!
Btw, the max penalty days are 30 days.
Just called Hokudai library. Looks like I have books that are more than 1 month overdue. Means I can't borrow for 1 month. Thus, I might as well not return any books lor. Muah ha ha ha! (or maybe I might borrow a lib card from a classmate...)
