恋とは何?What is love?
This question has been boggling my poor, hapless mind of late.
And I mean love as in 恋愛.
What in the world is this thing?
This thing that makes my friends sad, helpless, happy, euphoric, angry, bubbly, sappy, emotional, indecisive, laugh, cry. This thing that makes my brother so protective and defensive towards his her. This thing that makes people give up dreams and parts of themselves. This thing that some people can fall so easily in and out of while others hang tenaciously onto it. This thing that is absolutely out of my reach and makes me feel emotionally crippled as I couldn't empathize. This thing that I wallow non-stop within novels and mangas but back in real life, I feel so jaded and hostile towards.
Love (n): O.E. lufu "love, affection, friendliness," from P.Gmc. *lubo (cf. O.Fris. liaf, Ger. lieb, Goth. liufs "dear, beloved;" not found elsewhere as a noun, except O.H.G. luba, Ger. Liebe), from PIE *leubh- "to care, desire, love" (cf. L. lubet, later libet "pleases;" Skt. lubhyati "desires;" O.C.S. l'ubu "dear, beloved;" Lith. liaupse "song of praise"). Meaning "a beloved person" is from c.1225. The sense "no score" (in tennis, etc.) is 1742, from the notion of "playing for love," i.e. "for nothing" (1678). Love-letter is attested from c.1240; love-song from c.1310. To be in love with (someone) is from 1508. Love life "one's collective amorous activities" is from 1919, originally a term in psychological jargon.
I don't think I need it, since I have never had it. However, I am curious over what makes it all so important.
