We are all just skin deep in our 'Chineseness'
I honestly don't know if I have the capability, the mentality to blog about this. It's about just how skin deep we all are. A simple phone call on skype naturally gave rise to the skin deep question. It was not about how pretty she is (which was my first impression). Or is she still working, cos I noticed the shelves of books behind (or rather, I was drooling at the books behind her). Rather, it was a lot of gasping and shocked whispers. but at least it didn't end without attempting to address the question. It wasn't glossed over simply because it was, perhaps, 'politically wrong' to address this skin deep question.
But honestly, even though I say it is skin deep, it is still very REAL. It affects our reality, how others perceive us and how they react accordingly. Even if I don't want to acknowledge the power it has over us, I run the possiblity of 'sweeping the dust under the shelves'. Just because you don't want to acknowledge it doesn't mean that it is not there. Just because I say everybody are equal and there is no discrimination, or nobody belongs to a priviledged group, doesn't mean that this is true.
Still, I don't want to acknowledge it, at least when it makes it prescence known to me (sometimes, it just goes into my subconscious and I can't fight it). So I like to say, 'There are just too many people from different countries in Singapore for me to say that the most famous dish is chicken rice.' or say 'Singaporeans are NOT all so and so, Chinese are NOT all so and so, Malays are NOT all so and so..'
Cos at the end of the day, we are all just skin deep.
