In defense of romance
I had always been given the impression that romance novels are trash and it is wrong to read it. So said my English literature teacher in JC, when I was caught in the act of committing said offense. Some of my friends concur too. Admittedly, the plot is usually the same. Even one of my fellow enthusiast from JC days, Kat, had desisted in this pastime. However, I still read them now and then. For it is a form of entertainment to me, akin to watching movies, dramas, reading mangas and etc.
To my pleasant surprise, I realized that these novels have their uses too! I was just rereading some old novels when I realized that a lot of the bombastic words from my GRE actually appeared frequently in these old darlings! Hmmm... Given that most of these romance novels' authors are usually literature majors, I guess their repertoire of vocab comes with their background. Not to mention that we are talking about Victorian 'Sense and Sensibility' type of English. No wonder so many words sound so familiar even though I do not know the exact meaning!
Disclaimer: My defense is of romance novels and not romance, per se. Not every relationship ends in a 'happily ever after' and the state of singlehood will not cause you to be fatally handicapped in the act of living. Seriously!!
