The 5% club
Another post similar to the one on Michael Moore's 'Capitalism: A love story'. This time, I am writing on the 5% club. The 5% of richest people in the world who, with their combined assets, is thousands, maybe millions, of times richer than us. They are the kind of people who think nothing of paying 30 to 90k on a rolex watch. I caught a glimpse of their world when I went to rolex service center yesterday. Those who pay their attention to minute details while walking along orchard road will know that rolex service center is in the building right between Lucky Plaza and Paragon.
I went to the service center with my mum and aunt to send my father's watch for repair. Like every aspiring middle-class uncle whose obsessions are mainly rolex, cars and tiger beers, my father owns 3 rolex. Some are won during his gambling heydays, while I heard that one was bought from the sale of a gold chain that his friend left with him as a collateral.
Amazingly, the service center was quite crowded. There must be lots of aspiring middle class, especially since rolex has some lower priced watches ranging from 5k and above. Even so, the repair of an old rolex costs more than 1k! I was shocked! Anyway, my mum willingly paid for it, since it is her dahling precious hubby's watch. FYI, the same model, if new, now costs 10k. So to her, 1k was nothing.
I don't care about branded watches or bags, since I do not subscribe to the 'if you work hard enough, you will be rich' dream. It's a pipe dream used to pacify the poor people and at the same time, make them work hard enough in the factories or be office drones.
However, while gazing at photos of luxurious resorts and expensive cuisine in a spa and retreat magazine left in their waiting area, I can't help but wish to be Paris Hilton. Haizzzzzzz!
