People do change!
I have always been moaning over how some of my secondary school friends tend to be stuck in stasis, almost as if they really should be 'Forever 21'. However, I was quite pleasantly surprised today.
To start off, they were as usual LATE! Supposed to meet at Changi Airport T2's Swensen at 6pm to celebrate my belated bday and they only reached at 6:50pm. Of course, I was only slightly late and had to join in the long queue (I have no idea Swensen is so popular!!). Then, I finally got a seat in the restaurant after queuing for almost 20min by myself. Anyway, I was well prepared with my mp3 player and a Murakami novel, as I know that they will be late. SL had already asked me if she can invite EK, a secondary sch friend that I had not met for 15 years. So I know that he is coming.
I had always dreamed of meeting pri/sec classmates and seeing how much they have/ have not changed. EK was one of the smaller boys in class. A spright and active boy, I only got to know him through SL but we did not really talk. (FYI, I was one of the quieter, bookish girl in class whose head is in the clouds half the time.)
Now, he is actually taller than me (gasp!) and worked part-time as a model in the past! And he was a trader at UOB Kay Hian before changing to an insurance trader. While he still lives in Bedok Reservoir, it seems like both his feet were firmly out of the heartlands. He even has an English name: James!! Unfortunately, he seems to be drinking and smoking heavily.
He proves the fact that not all graduating class of 1996 from Ping Yi Secondary are FB-less or even internet-less. He actually has a FB account! Not that I am judging people by their lack of FB or internet... you can survive without FB, but if you don't use the internet, I have to wonder if you are living in a third world country or stuck in the 80s.
Unfortunately, I am reluctant to add him on FB. He has 500 friends!!!! I am highly suspicious of people with 500 friends. Do you think you can possibly know 500 people really well enough to call friend? I don't even wanna add the kids from my previous baito (EA games) cos I don't think we are truly considered friends yet! Not to mention that tagging someone with 500 friends means that this 500 friends will have access to your photo album!
Btw, once my secondary sch friends know that I am going to NY, they were already aiming at free lodgings!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unlike HJ, they don't really want to go NY to meet ME. It was really more like to use me as a tour guide and my place as a free place to bunk in. Haiz.... Dear friends, if you really think of me as your friend, please come and visit me. But don't try to fleece me or use me to get some cheap deals.
