Falling into never never land
Sometimes, I do feel like Carrie, flitting into the world of the 20s, the married, the with kids, the 30s and etc. Except this time, it was a journey into the almost 20s. In spite of having to work at the JTB booth in Isetan Scotts Hokkaido Fair on both Friday and Saturday, I met up with Tomoe, some of the EA gang and her friend at Clark Quay’s Rebel on Friday night 10.oopm and again the next day after work.
T's friend, J, is a very cheerful and friendly, just-turned-18 girl who talks at the speed of a machine gun. It was also her first time at a club. For a certified non-chionger, I at least know the basics on how to gear up for the night. A tote (I managed to dig one 80s sparkly tote from the bottom of my drawer), handphone, a novel, cash, credit card, identity card and transit link card. But the poor girl did not bring any form of identity card other than her poly student card, with no info on her DOB! So she had to rush back home to get it. She emptied her wallet but carried a large tote bag. Defeats the purpose of carrying light but it was definitely a memorable virgin attempt at clubbing for her.
Amazingly, and perhaps for the first time, I had a good time. Perhaps it was because I felt comfortable nursing my Martell+green tea while observing the human interaction 'ball-game'. Or perhaps it was because I finally know a little bit more American music and was able to appreciate the boomz. The martell kicked in later in the night and I twisted to the tunes of Lady Gaga and 'Empire State of Mind'. J was wearing a wig so I can't help but keep tossing my hair to the beat. I ended up tossing one earring into never never land and now, I have only half a pair of lovely blue crystal earring that I bought in Europe! Tomoe morphed into a tee-totaling blue Energizer rabbit and danced non-stop while at least 4 pathetic men tried to grind her. The rabbit gave them the invisible treatment.
One of the guys on our group paid for the martell and proceeded to finish half the bottle. He ended up so drunk that he kept wandering to the middle of the road while we were waiting for the taxi and even vomited into a bag on our way home! Even though I had to work at 11am the next day, I only got back home at 4.30am!
The next day (or should I say the same day) Tomoe, J and V visited me at my booth at after I finished work, and we went for a some coffee and shopping-lite. It was quite sweet seeing them together. There were secondary school friends and even though their paths had started to diverge, they still seem to be quite close to each other. J and V were so friendly that we turned into good friends the moment we met. It was uncanny!!
The world of almost 20s consist of several high fives, an unrestrained outpouring of family history, and a sudden blow-up in Starbucks. Two of them engaged in high speed chitter, as if they were starved for more time and were trying to put more mileage into their words per sec.
All in all, I had a great time. There were some out-of-body experiences where I floated to the ceiling and started observing my interactions with them. Other than that, it was pure and simple chit-chat with splashes of conversation. In spite of being almost 20s, they were so different in character, experience and background that I didn't feel out of place at all.
Sometimes, things like 'almost 20s' and 'freshly 30s' are simply barriers we put up in order to simplify and categorize this complicated world we live in. Don't label others and more importantly, don't ever put yourself into a closed room and limit your world. You will only feel old if you believe you are old.
