My silver platter
To my family, my upcoming studies in NYU is the pot at the end of a rainbow. My absolutely wonderful life offered to me on a silver platter. I get the best deal among my siblings and I am the blessed, lucky one.
Yes, I am happy to be admitted into NYU and I intend to be happy during my next five years there. But I am also realistic. I have always been realistic, even before I left for Hokkaido four years ago. Getting to live overseas is a whole new life but it is not necessarily perfect. There will be times of loneliness and helplessness.
Who is to say that living in Singapore, with a steady job and a boyfriend who treats you like his private goddess is not a silver platter too? But no, they told me that I am supposed to pity her. And in a gesture of my compassion, I am supposed to give my room to her. This is further based on the premise that she will get married within the next two years even though we have no indication of any HDB flat in the horizon. Who can say that he might suddenly realize that he is getting a bad deal and decide to make a run for his life? And do you think she feels that my future is a silver platter, given that fact that I will be entering a lousy, low-ranked uni?
So yes. It is final. First, I am giving up the larger room that I love (there are stars in the ceiling) to my brother. Next, I am giving up the smaller room that I was supposed to have to my sister, as she threatened not to move in if my mum make her share a room with my aunt. And the final kill is that I will have to share a room with my aunt.
Perhaps I am complaining unnecessarily here. Perhaps I am supposed to be grateful that I get NYC. Me getting NYC means that I have no right to a room with my family. Because I am getting the better deal.
