Round the musical chairs... AGAIN!!!
I wait in trepidation for this coming Friday, where I get to play 'round the musical chairs', albeit in my home country. Friends who lived overseas might be familiar with this. Sociable friends who lived overseas might be well versed in this social interaction. Otaku friends will not be attending these functions.
It is where you deliberately meet up with a group of strangers and perform the niceties, hoping against hope that you might just happen upon a wonderful friend to be your succor in a strange new world. Connections leading to future benefits in the area of work and study may also occur.
I tell myself that I look forward to playing nice. It can be an exciting excavation, discovering people with similar interest and uncovering their lives. On the other hand, I am subjecting myself to a playing field that is highly dependent on the portrayal of me as a successful social actor and the approbation of others.
This time, the game is held in PLAYERS@SG among current and future students of NYU and the age of the participants ranges from 18 to 25. Of course, I do not put up mental barriers against the 20s. It is just the musical chairs I have an issue with, especially since I played it so many times in Japan. Sometimes, the thin veneer of sociality will border on boredom and give me an out of body experience, where the academic in me starts to analyse the social interaction between participants and the underlying discourse of social norms. I wonder if that will happen this Friday. I also wonder if I will be the only person who don't know anybody there. tokidoki tokidoki...
