motto motto!!
It's getting worse. My perverse pleasure in academic stress is getting worse.
Naoko left last week and I thought I could get on with my readings. However, I am barely catching on. One of my professor in EAS focuses on China and talks about Marx all the time, when I had forgotten all about this ah peh (Btw, if you are interested in Marx, check out this online lecture by Prof. Harvey from CUNY: http://davidharvey.org/reading-capital/). Today, I spent a whole day writing a measly 3 page essay, and knowing what I want to say but unable to sieve through my sad repertoire of English vocab in my anthro seminar. Tomorrow, I have a seminar with 4 articles on Foucault and Habermas which I have not touched at all.
I am someone who likes to announce my superficial and material happiness to the world. A great romance-fantasy novel, k or j-drama, a movie, purchase of a pair of shoes that finally fit me (an impossible feat, cos I like to torture my feet), shopping, or encounter with a delicious meal. On a deeper level, I also use this blog to air my grievances over my family and emo all over.
This is the first time where I actually have to say, I am bone-deep happy over a non-superficial event. I am finally studying and I am happy. Of course, there are still some issues that plague me as an academic... questions of power, the subaltern voice, agency... but these are secondary. I am simply happy to be using my brain. My brain is one happy little grey mass. I am physically tired and sleepy but my brain is shouting 'yaay!'
Oh, on another note... it seems like UBC's anthro dept is quite famous! SHEEET! I actually got an offer from UBC anthro but turned it down due to lack of funding. Haiz....
Back to my brain... one reason it is happy was that I finally realized that the almost introductory grad class for anthro is full of American MA students who make noise. White noise. Clearly, that is why there are no actual anthro students in it. Which makes it a great intro class for me to get back my anthro groove but I will have to listen to lots of white noise. But white noise is also good for the ego of my brain. Woo hoo!
